Reading - The Perfect Pastime!

February 19, 2016

February is Reading Month at Sullins Academy. This year our slogan is “Reading - The Perfect Pastime.” As we acknowledge and recognize the importance of reading in our lives, our students get to participate in some fun activities. Selected students auditioned for an opportunity to record a radio spot that aired on local radio stations. Students who recorded radio spots last year will be filming a commercial about reading that will air on the local BVU community access channel.

Students in first through eighth grades also participated in various contests where they submitted a drawing that represented a favorite book. These are on display in the library, and on the windows outside the library. Judging will determine a first, second, and third place with the winners receiving Scholastic Dollars to spend at the spring Book Fair.

Local “celebrity” guests have been invited to read to groups of students during theirscheduled library time. This is always a big hit with the children, as well as with those who give their time to support our celebration. This activity will continue on into March with our school’s participation in the Read Across America project which honors Dr. Seuss. Catherine Brillhart will be at Sullins on March 3rd, to read to our Preschool through Kindergarten classes.

Another activity that is very popular during Reading Month is the visit from the Barter Players. Students are entertained with quality theater brought into their school. The Barter Players also take time to go into the classrooms to read to groups of our younger students. The children always enjoy being read to by the characters from the play they have just seen.

This is the sixth anniversary of our school’s celebration of Reading Month, and we are always grateful to everyone who joins in and supports our recognition that reading is important in the lives of everyone. And, as our slogan this year suggests, Reading is the Perfect Pastime!
