Sullins Academy is governed by a Board of Directors that operates under guiding priniciples of the National Association of Independent Schools. The Sullins Board is the governing body for the school and as such, has a number of key roles:
- to determine the mission of the school and see that it is upheld
- to determine the strategic direction of the school
- to ensure resource to accomplish the mission and the financial viability of the school, and
- to hire, manage and evaluate the Head of School
In essence, the board is directly responsible for the oversight, strategic direction, business well-being and liability management of the school. It is the board’s responsibility to re-evaluate the mission and the direction of the school to ensure that our purpose is relevant and to monitor the success of the school in fulfilling our mission.
The Head of School will report to the Board of Directors. The Head of School is responsible for managing the internal operations of the school. That entails overseeing Middle and Lower Schools (including Division Heads, all faculty, programming, and curriculum), Related Arts Classes (including Art, Technology, Foreign Language, P.E., and Music), and all other programs (SOAR, Athletics, School of Music, Summer Programs, etc.) The Head of School is also responsible for overseeing the Associate Head for Human Resource, Facilities and Finance. The Head of School is also responsible for managing the external aspects of the school, including development, marketing, admissions, strategic planning, alumni and 50th Anniversary planning. The Board and the Head of School work in partnership with each other to establish both annual and long term goals for the school. This process is in accordance with best practices for independent schools throughout the nation.

Sullins Board of Directors
The Sullins Board of Directors is comprised of a group of parents and community leaders who reflect the professional expertise and diverse perspective necessary to help uphold and further the mission and strategic objectives of the school. In addition, the Board has traditionally served as leader in giving to the school, with 100% participation in donations to the annual fund and to major events or scholarships.

The Board of Directors of Sullins Academy recognizes that members of the Sullins community may wish to contact or meet with the Board of Directors when an issue is deemed to have been resolved unsatisfactorily with the Head of School. In such a case, anyone wishing to meet with the Board is asked to complete a meeting request form which must be submitted to the Board Chairman. The Board Chairman and Executive Committee will review the request and will determine whether or not a meeting with the Board is appropriate. In either case, the Board will respond to the request. If a meeting is approved, a date will be established by the Board Chairman. At that time, a personal presentation of the issue may be made to the Board of Directors. The presentation would normally occur at the beginning of the Board meeting in order to provide the directors an opportunity to ask questions and clarify information. The Board will then make a determination for follow up and provide a response to the issue.
